L-1 & EB-1C VISAS: EXPANDING YOUR BUSINESS To The U.S.
Bringing your leadership—and your vision—across borders
Whether you’re opening a new office in the U.S. or transferring one of your top team members to help grow operations here, the L-1 and EB-1C visas are two great options to make it happen.
At Burgos Law, we work with global companies, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who are ready to take the next big step. We’ll guide you through the visa process and help make your move to the U.S. smooth, strategic, and stress-free.
WHAT IS THE L-1 Visa?
The L-1 is a temporary visa that lets companies move key employees—like managers or executives—from their overseas operations to their U.S. office. If you’re launching a new U.S. branch, this visa can also help you send someone over to get things started.
There are two types:
- L-1A: For executives and managers
- L-1B: For employees with specialized knowledge
To qualify, the person must have worked for your business abroad for at least one year in the past three years and be coming to the U.S. to take on a leadership or specialist role.
WHAT IS THE EB-1C Green Card?
Think of EB-1C as the next step after the L-1A. It’s a green card (permanent residence) for executives or managers working for multinational companies. It allows qualified executives and managers to apply directly for a green card without going through the PERM labor certification process.
It’s a great option for those who are already in the U.S. on an L-1A—or for companies that are ready to move a leader here more permanently.

FAQs
How long can I stay in the U.S. on an L-1 visa?
L-1A (for managers and execs) is good for up to 7 years. L-1B (specialized knowledge workers) can stay for up to 5 years.
Can I get a green card after the L-1?
Yes! That’s exactly what the EB-1C green card is for. Many L-1A holders later apply for it to stay permanent.
What’s the difference between L-1 and EB-1C?
The L-1 is a temporary work visa. The EB-1C is a green card that lets you live and work in the U.S. long-term.
Do I need a big company to qualify?
Not necessarily. We work with small to medium-sized companies too—as long as we can show strong operations and a genuine need to transfer someone.
Can I use this visa to start a new U.S. office?
Absolutely. The L-1A is a great option for opening a new branch.
Can my spouse work in the U.S. too?
Yes! If your spouse comes with you on an L-2 visa, they’re allowed to work in the U.S. automatically—no extra paperwork needed.
Do I have to apply from outside the U.S.?
Not always. Some clients apply from abroad through a U.S. embassy, and others change their status from within the U.S. We’ll help you choose the best path for your situation.
